US Access Board releases new standards for examination and procedure chairs

VERSAILLES, Ohio, Nov. 11, 2024 — Midmark Corp., a leading medical solutions provider focused on the design of the clinical environment to improve the delivery of care, today announced the Midmark 626 Barrier-Free Examination Chair not only meets but exceeds the 2024 US Access Board Standards for Accessible Medical Diagnostic Equipment.

In fact, the US Access Board, the federal agency providing leadership and guidance for accessible design, found the Midmark 626 Barrier-Free Examination Chair to be the only chair currently on the market that complies with and exceeds the new standard. Effective Sept. 24, 2024, the key ruling of the Access Board is that examination and procedure chairs should have a low seat height of 17 inches. Of all the adjustable-height examination tables the Access Board reviewed, over 75 percent have a low height of 18-19 inches, and 50 percent of those are at 18 inches.1

Within the final ruling, the standards provide design criteria for examination and procedure chairs as well as weight scales and other diagnostic equipment that are accessible to people with disabilities.

“Accessibility in healthcare facilities is not only instrumental in providing the best care possible, it's also a legal requirement. Even when taking federal guidelines into consideration, health systems may still fall short of state guidelines,” said Kurt Forsthoefel, marketing director, Midmark Medical. “At Midmark, we can help by identifying the key factors impacting spatial layout in an exam room, such as procedures, equipment, ADA regulations, mobility devices, patient throughput and location of equipment. These factors are all important in ensuring a better healthcare experience and access to care for everyone.”
