VERSAILLES, Ohio, Jan 4, 2023 — Midmark Corp., a leading animal health solutions provider focused on the design of the clinical environment to improve the delivery of care, today announced a partnership with the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine to offer a two-week dentistry elective as part of its fourth-year clinical rotations.
"After years of providing post-graduate dentistry and anesthesia training across the country, we recognized that many veterinary schools struggle with having the resources to equip graduates with the core competencies in dentistry that are demanded by today’s top veterinary practices,” shares Andrew Schultz, Jr., Midmark Animal Health director of business development and clinical services.
To help address this issue, Midmark began working with Dr. Calvin Johnson, DVM, PhD, DACVP, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, and Dr. Erin Chamorro, DVM, clinical assistant professor of small animal dentistry and community practice, to design a clinical rotation pilot program to provide a comprehensive dentistry elective for students.
Schultz adds, “Sponsoring this program is our way of investing in the future of veterinary dentistry. This pilot could become the model for expanding the opportunity to other veterinary schools.”
In late March 2023, a cohort of eight fourth-year veterinary students from Auburn will participate in a week of dentistry lectures and hands-on labs at Midmark’s education and experience center in Versailles, Ohio. Each student will also be matched with a Heartland Veterinary practice where they will spend the following week in an immersive externship in general practice dentistry.
“Competency in veterinary dentistry is important for the success of our graduates,” notes Dean Johnson. “Our goal is to increase student training in veterinary dentistry through didactic lectures, hands-on laboratories and applied clinical experiences. We are closely aligned with the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry in this effort and our partnership with Midmark Academy and Heartland Veterinary Partners will help ensure that Auburn’s graduates continue to be practice ready.”
Board-certified veterinary dentists are donating their time during the pilot program to provide the training, working alongside veterinary technician specialists in dentistry and anesthesia. The Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry will provide a generous $5,000 grant to support the education effort.
